Considered an ancient secret of the Incans. Maca is most commonly known for its libido enhancing properties. It does not contain any hormones, however it can be used as a hormone replacement food. Maca stimulates the pituitary gland into producing precursor hormones which ultimately end up raising testosterone levels as well as balancing the thyroid, hypothalamus, pancreas and adrenals. As we learned in last week’s post about the health benefits of coconuts: optimal testosterone levels = stronger, harder longer lasting erections. Maca is super boner food! Nowadays it is commonly used by competitive athletes due to its ability to increase energy, stamina, oxygen in the blood, physical strength and neurotransmitter production. Increased energy and stamina translates to a better more fulfilling sex life. It is maca’s ability to regulate and support the endocrine system that also make it an excellent cure for chronic fatigue, depression, stress, tension and adrenal exhaustion. Manage stress and maintain a healthy endocrine system and you will be able have and maintain healthy erections.

Maca is also rich in calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, potassium, sulfur, sodium, iron and trace minerals including zinc, iodine, copper, selenium, bismuth, manganese, tin, and silicon. Maca is an a category of medicinal plants called “adaptogens”. Adaptogens increase the body’s power of resistance against different stressors including physical, chemical and biological agents. It contains immune-enhancing sterols, including sitosterol, campesterol, ergosterol, ergosterol, brassicasterol, and ergostadienol.

Maca can be found in most health food stores. It is most commonly found dried and ground to a powder. Maca’s flavor is light, nutty and malty. It can be easily blended in smoothies, juices or water. I enjoy adding maca powder to my protein shakes or blending it into fruit smoothies. Maca’s unique flavor goes particularly well with chocolate which makes it a great addition to any recipe you are making with raw cacao; another incredible superfood.
