As I have talked about before, testosterone is a major male sex hormone and it plays a fundamental role in male development: bigger muscles, sexual function, mood, energy levels, hair growth. Since testosterone levels drop as we age it is important for us to put healthy practices in place to maintain optimal levels.

One of my favorite testosterone boosting foods are brazil nuts. They are a rich source of protein, calcium and magnesium. But their secret ingredient is often an over-looked and under-celebrated trace mineral called selenium. Multiple studies have shown that brazil nuts boost testosterone due to their high levels of selenium, the highest of any food ever discovered (a one ounce serving provides a whopping 988% of the Recommended Daily Value!). Some men take selenium supplements for this reason and because it has been proven to improve sperm count and quality. Tim Ferris recommends eating brazil nuts in his testosterone boosting regimen in his popular book, THE 4 HOUR BODY. Popular blogger and author Matt Frazier, creator of the NO MEAT ATHLETE, reports that brazil nuts are one of  the foods he incorporates in his diet every single day.

-Vitamin E: There is evidence that Vitamin E contributes to healthy testosterone levels, but it is also a powerful antioxidant. Boosting the immune system, anti-aging, fighting free-radical damage and contributing to healthy skin are all additional benefits. By protecting our cells, we protect the organs and systems that they comprise. Vitamin E = a healthy prostate, gonads and endocrine system.

-L-arginine: The most important vasodilator in the body, being converted into nitric oxide in the blood vessels. L-arginine is essential for improving blood flow throughout the body. This does two major things for someone on The Dick Diet. 1.) It ensures that bio-active nutrients go where they are needed. 2.) It contributes to penile erectile strength: aka solid boners. In supplement form L-arginine has been referred to as a pro-sexual nutrient that some report is just as effective as Viagra when taken within 45 minutes to an hour before sex.

The cool thing about this delicious and versatile nut is that, unlike many of the more exotic super food and herbs, brazil nuts are easy to find. They can be purchased at your local grocery store for between $12-$18 a pound. Brazil nuts blend up well in smoothies or can be enjoyed chopped up and added to trail mix, granola or oatmeal. Brazil nuts are incredibly versatile due to their rich and earthy flavor and their softer-than-average consistency. With a quick google search you can find that the internet is chock full of recipes for brazil nut gravies, soups, dips and spreads.
